The Tall Ships Race, small entrants. Competitors assembled at the South Quay prior to leaving for Oslo, Norway. The Lydia Eva, a floating museum, was not a competitor, but led the procession to the harbour mouth before proceeding to her permanent berth at St Katherine's Dock, London.

Gt Yarmouth Town Wall NW tower from S [1246] 1936-08-01
Permission to defend the town with a wall and ditch was granted by Henry III in 1261, but building did not actually commence until 1285. It was probably not finished until about 1400 although a chronicler tells us that the circuit was completed in 1346. The wall enclosed the town on three sides. On the fourth, west, side it was defended by the river.

King Street. Built 1714. This chapel of ease to the parish church was built on behalf of the corporation by John Price and son of Richmond, Surrey. It was supposed to have been modelled on the church of St Clement Dane in The Strand. The total cost 5861 pounds.

The 14c Tollhouse in Middlegate Street. One of the oldest municipal buildings in England. A gaol and a courthouse until the end of 19c, since when it has housed first the library and then the museum. Gutted by fire in WW2, and since admirably restored.

Built in 1596 by Benjamin Cowper, merchant, and bought by John Carter, bailiff, in 1635. During his occupancy, meetings of Cromwell's followers were held in an upper room here, at one of which it is said the death of the captive King Charles was decided upon.

Built by Roger Drury, bailiff of Yarmouth in 1584 and 1593, and MP in 1588. It dates from the early years of the 17c, and stands on land once the orchard and garden of the Blackfriars. Later owned by Richard Ferrier, mayor 1706 and 1720, and Jacob Preston, mayor 1793, 1801 and 1813 in which year he opened Yarmouth's new Regent Street.

The Hall was built in two periods. First c1742 by Matthew Brettingham, a range being added c1785 by James Wyatt. The earlier house destroyed by fire in 1882.
