Wilby:
Wilby Old Hall [4996] 1965-08-25
Early 17c. The presence of a moat on two sides suggests that this was not the first hall on the site. Owned in the 15c and 16c by the Cursons, but the Lovells of Harling were owning up to 1627 at least, one of whom was probably the builder. Robert Wilton, a Royalist, was living here in 1641.

The church was entirely refurnished after a fire in 1633 and retains benches, box-pews, 3 decker pulpit, altar rails and table, all in unrestored condition.

Seat of the Cator family, situated in extensive and park-like grounds about a mile from the church, it was much enlarged in the latter part of the 19c, but was destroyed by fire on 29 December 1882. Rebuilt in the following year.

Wymondham Abbey south side [0083] 1934-04-15
Abbey church of Ss Mary and Thomas of Canterbury. The Abbey for Benedictine monks was founded about 1107 by William d'Albini Earl of Arundel, and Maud his wife. The church was originally jointly used by monks and laity, but some time after 1250 was divided: the monks taking the eastern part and the parishioners the western. This parochial part, except for the eastern tower which belonged to the monastery, is almost the only portion of the building remaining.
