Buildings on the east side
of the lane known as the Chantry, were affected by the
widening of Theatre Street in 1964. One of these had a
rather unusual feature above its front doorway, a large canopy
of wood (right) whose supporting brackets had been
carved to resemble those at the Strangers Hall in
Charing Cross. While those at the Chantry appeared to be
Victorian in origin, those at the Strangers Hall
had been erected over the street door by Francis Cock in
1621; they were moved some years ago to the inner
passageway to avoid damage by passing traffic. |
